Things To Know Before Tuning Your Car

by Conrad Mathis on June 21, 2010

Customizing cars has become very popular over the years, especially with car movies like the Fast and the Furious. There are more tuning shops and more products available if you’re looking to tune up your car. This article will help you understand what you should know if you’re thinking about tuning your engine to add more power to the car.

Many of these options can be found online. There’s a wide range of quality when looking at these products. Some of the basic kits will promise to add more power, but they’re very basic. These kits may only be a cone air filter, which will only increase your supply by approximately 15 horse power. A basic filter can be purchased for $50-$250, depending on the quality.

Then there are turbo kits or compressors. If you’re really looking to add power, this is the way to go. A turbo kit can add a whopping 100-600 extra horse power. Unfortunately, there’s a hefty price tag and it will cost more than your basic air filters.

Basic turbo kits will usually have an exhaust manifold included in it. This is important to look out for. This will also be tailored to the type of car. They also include intercoolers with pipes, an air filter and blow off valve. To help maximize the performance they also include oil lines, several hoses and gaskets.

If your car can’t handle the improvements, you may need to make some more changes. It’s common that your clutch will need to change from stock to a sports clutch. A sports clutch can absorb the torque in an easier manner. Other stock items that may need an upgrade are the head gasket, fuel injectors, pumps, sensors, fuel pressure regulators and more.

For an entire turbo kit, it can range anywhere from $4,000 – $8,000 depending on how much work you want to do. The engine tuning and installation can add on an additional cost as well.

If the installation isn’t done properly, other parts may have problems. Always use a well known shop to do the work. If they’re a quality shop, they’ll most likely use a dynostand to do the work.

Tuning the car can be a lot of fun, but it can add up pretty quick. Once it’s done, your car will feel like a completely different car and you’ll enjoy the added benefits. Drive safe!
